I purchased the rifle at a gun show for $400. Not only does it function flawlessly, it also can use both metric and inch pattern magazines reliably. Rawles, I was lucky when I purchased a Century Arms L1A1 (British Commonwealth inch pattern FN/FAL) Clone a few years back. This is the model Century Arms Manufactured from surplus British and Australian L1A1 / L1A1-A Military issue rifle for California State Law compliance. It has a dual “W” feed ramp and the first 3 of the S/N are 105. It has a milled out area near the century markings where it looks like Century removed someone else’s Receiver mark. Picked up a 6 digit (all numbers.no letters in S/N) century L1A1 Sporter. ARS carries a wide variety of spare and replacement parts for the FAL and L1A1 rifles.

ARS will not work on the low quality products from Hesse/Vulcan Arms, Olympic Arms, Williams Arms Company, Century Arms International, Entreprise Arms (some early ABNI marked exceptions), or DPMS. BTW, my receiver is in the mid 106,000 range. All of the other parts are L1A1, down to the sand-cut bolt carrier.

It's easier to clean properly when they're popped apart too.I was lucky when I purchased a Century Arms L1A1 (British Commonwealth inch pattern FN/FAL) Clone a few years back. Separate upper from lower and go clean to your heart's content. It's possible that since it's no longer attached to any kind of ammunition feeding device it might not even be considered a semi-automatic rifle anymore but that's just me speculating.

At that moment the upper no longer has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine, so it falls out of the legal definition of an assault weapon from PC 12276.1(a). This separates the upper cleanly from the lower. I can see where the mag log might get in the way of the normal pivoting motion you get when you pop the take-down lever but once you've started rotating the upper away from the lower it's really easy to take out the pivot pin. Remember that with the FAL the upper is the registered firearm, not the lower like an AR. However I seem to recall that with the FAL it's a fairly simple thing to do this legally. Well, as they say on dem interwebz, I'm not a lawyer. So how does one properly clean the gun without removing the maglock/bb and thus violating CA law? Is there a maglock/bb design that allows one to properly disassemble the firearm? My friend has an enterprise FAL style rifle(I think) and the maglock/bb on his prevents one from removing the bolt and adequately cleaning the gun. The mag release will need to be converted to the metric design and a mag lock/bb installed b4 I'm even able to fire it. Hate to bump this thread but I have the opportunity to buy a CAI L1A1 for $350.

Something I'll be looking into for the future. I haven't looked into it too deeply but I believe you can in fact swap out the Inch mag release parts for the Metric stuff then use a bullet-button type setup. Mag was locked into place by drilling/tapping a small hole in the mag release and putting in a small set screw. Personally, I've run mine with a scope rail top partial cover modified to allow the use of stripper clips for top loading. Or at LEAST turn the deal over to one of us! I'm sure there would be plenty of takers. Fantastic deal though, I'd highly recommend getting this one for yourself. Most of the shooting issues I've had with it were eventually traced to the crappy Indian surplus ammo that was thrown in with the rifle. Run out of ammo and club your enemies to death. Swapped out most of the cruddy plastic furniture for an Aussie stock and Israeli front grip, it is a manly, rugged rifle. I got a similar deal on a Century R1A1 a few years back, it has the 'uni-brow' dealie which is not ideal, occasionally there are jams because of it.
